Mansard Conversion
What is a Mansard loft conversion?

A Mansard loft conversion takes its name from the 17th-century French architect François Mansard. Typically situated at the rear of the house, it can also be located at the front in some cases, depending on the type of property and whether nearby homes have already received permission for this style. A Mansard features a flat roof with a slight pitch to direct rainwater into the gutters, and its sides slope back at a 72-degree angle, creating its signature look.

Benefits of a Mansard loft conversion

Mansard loft conversions are an excellent option for maximizing usable space in your attic. If you’re considering a loft conversion, you likely want to create an additional bedroom, bathroom, playroom, lounge, or office. A Mansard conversion can provide that extra living area in a stylish and functional way. In certain parts of London and the Home Counties, planning authorities often prefer this design over rear dormer conversions.

Exterior finish options

The exterior of your Mansard loft conversion can be finished in brick, tile, or slate. The specific type of tile or slate will be selected on-site to ensure a close match with the existing roof. If you choose brick, it will be coordinated with the current brickwork. Other external elements, such as fascias, soffits, gutters, and windows, will also be matched as closely as possible to the existing finishes, ensuring the Mansard conversion blends seamlessly with the original property.
Will you need planning permission?

If your property has permitted development rights, you can proceed with a Mansard conversion under a Certificate of Lawfulness. This certificate allows you to start construction without waiting for approval, provided you comply with council guidelines.
If you lack permitted development rights, you will need to apply for planning permission before beginning any work. Work cannot commence until permission is granted, and the council typically issues a decision within eight weeks of validating your application.
at Domenech Design we will determine the necessary permissions and handle the submission of relevant applications to secure the appropriate approvals for your project.
