L Shaped- Mansard Conversion

What is an L-Shaped Mansard Loft Conversion?

An L-shaped mansard loft conversion is a unique type of extension that creates an L-shaped space by altering both the main roof and an adjoining rear roof. This design is especially popular for Victorian and Edwardian properties that have an existing rear extension. The mansard roof slopes at the front with a flat section at the top, optimizing headroom while blending seamlessly with the architectural style of the home.

Benefits of an L-Shaped Mansard Extension

An L-shaped mansard conversion provides a spacious and versatile area, often used as a bedroom, bathroom, or home office. Its unique shape maximizes usable floor space and can even accommodate multiple rooms, making it ideal for larger families or those needing extra living areas. Additionally, the design allows for ample natural light, with options to install Velux windows or even French doors for added style and light.

Exterior Finish Options

The exterior of an L-shaped mansard conversion can be tailored with materials like brick, tile, slate, render, or cladding to match your home’s existing look. Brick and tile options are selected on-site to ensure a close match, while rendered finishes can be customized by our plasterers to suit the current aesthetic. Elements such as fascias, soffits, and gutters will also be matched to the existing structure, providing a seamless integration that looks original to the property.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

For properties with permitted development rights, an L-shaped mansard conversion can be done under a Certificate of Lawfulness, allowing construction to begin as long as council guidelines are followed. Properties without these rights will need full planning permission, and work can only start once approval is received, generally within eight weeks of the application validation. We’ll manage the process from determining the necessary permissions to submitting all applications, ensuring all the correct approvals are in place.
