Hip To Gable Roof Conversion
What is a Hip to Gable loft conversion?

A hip to gable loft conversion involves modifying a roof that has a sloping side, in addition to the slopes at the front and back of the property. This type of conversion requires raising the lower part of the side slope vertically and extending the existing ridge to form a gable end. This change significantly enlarges the available loft space, often accommodating a new stairwell. However, hip to gable conversions are not suitable for mid-terraced homes, as they lack the necessary sloping side.

Benefits of a Hip to Gable loft conversion

The primary benefit of a hip to gable conversion is the substantial increase in usable space. By replacing the sloping roof with a partially horizontal one, the loft gains ample headroom, transforming it into a fully functional living area. Additionally, hip to gable conversions can be combined with rear dormer or L-shaped conversions, further maximizing your property's potential.

Can any house have a hip to gable loft conversion?

Hip to gable conversions are particularly suitable for bungalows, semi-detached, and detached houses, although they are most commonly seen on semi-detached and end-of-terrace properties. It's important to note that mid-terraced homes cannot support hip to gable conversions due to the absence of a sloping side.

Exterior finish options

The exterior of a hip to gable conversion can be finished in various materials, including tile, slate, render, or cladding. If you opt for tile or slate, the specific type will be chosen on-site to ensure it closely matches the existing roof. For rendered finishes, our skilled plasterers can create a range of designs to complement your current finish. If you prefer brick, it will be matched to the existing brickwork. Other external features, such as fascias, soffits, gutters, and windows, will also be coordinated with existing materials to ensure the hip to gable conversion seamlessly blends with the original structure.

Will you need planning permission?

If your property benefits from permitted development rights, you can proceed with a hip to gable conversion under a Certificate of Lawfulness. This allows you to begin construction without waiting for application approval, as long as you comply with council regulations.
If your property does not have permitted development rights, you will need to obtain planning permission before starting work. Construction cannot begin until permission has been granted, and the council typically issues a decision within eight weeks of validating your application.
we will determine the necessary permissions and handle the submission of relevant applications to ensure you receive the appropriate approvals for your project.
